MINGEI INTERNATIONAL TO OPEN FOR MEMORIAL DAY

For the first time in its nearly 32-year history, Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park will open on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day’s events will feature live performance of American piano music between 1 and 3 p.m. Selections will include ragtime, music by Fats Waller and George Gershwin, traditional songs and popular standards. Also planned in honor of the holiday is a gift from The Collectors’ Gallery Museum store with every purchase of $25 or more. Shoppers will receive a copy of the Museum’s colorful publication, American Expressions of Liberty – Art of the People, by the People, for the People.
“Opening this Memorial Day is a first for the Museum,” says Director Rob Sidner. “We look forward to offering visitors to Balboa Park an enriching family experience.”
On view at the Museum are ¡VIVA MÉXICO! – Heroes and Artisans, SONABAI – Another Way of Seeing, FISCH OUT OF WATER – Sea Creatures of Arline Fisch, TRANSFORMED BY FIRE – June Schwarcz Enamel Vessels and FIFTY-SIX CHINESE HATBOXES – and one hat!
Located at 1439 El Prado in Balboa Park, Mingei International Museum’s regular hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for students and active military with ID. For information, call 619-239-0003 or visit www.mingei.org.
