Gallery Sketching

Museum Guidelines

Mingei International Museum permits, and encourages, sketching in the Museum galleries.

Sketching guidelines:

  • Sketchers need to notify the front desk that they intend to sketch in the galleries.
  • Regular admission is charged; members are free as usual.
  • Sketching is permitted with dry media only (pencil, colored pencil or crayon).
  • Approved drawing surfaces are hand-held sketchbooks, notebooks and small drawing boards. Easels, propping materials against walls or display cases or spreading materials on the floor are not permitted.
  • Care must be taken not to hinder visitor traffic in the galleries or to block any visitor’s view of Museum objects.
  • Sketching is permitted of objects or groups of objects only, not of people or Museum staff.
  • Groups of sketchers (four or more) must request a sketching permit one week in advance, with a designated low-traffic sketching time.

The Museum does not supply chairs to sketchers. Small temporary seating may be brought by sketchers for their individual use.

The Museum does not permit sketching on Residents Free Tuesday and reserves the right to deny sketching on other high-traffic days or when it might otherwise inconvenience Museum staff and/or visitors.
